When You Are On Diet - The Essential Food Choices

By: Stewart C

When you are on a diet, you have to choose the right kind of food to eat. That means that you have to start eating healthier to live healthier and not just to lose weight. To have that healthy diet, you should have more fruits and vegetables, drink more water, eat more starchy foods like rice, potatoes, bread and pasta, eat less fat, salt and sugar, and have some protein-rich foods like meat and fish.

Water should be everyone's favorite thing to drink, because of the health benefits that we get from it. Two-thirds of our body weight is made up of water. It's very important that we maintain this because most of the chemicals reactions that are happening in our cells need water. Water is also very important in helping our blood deliver nutrients to different parts of our body.

To have a healthy diet, you should not exclude having fiber in your diet. Fiber can only be found in plants. A lot of people nowadays do not eat enough fiber anymore. This is due to the popularity of cutting down carbohydrates to lose weight. Fiber is very good for everyone, whether it is insoluble or soluble. Insoluble fiber helps in keeping a person's bowels healthy and stops constipation, while soluble fiber helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol a person has in his blood. Wholegrain bread, breakfast and cereals, as well as fruits and vegetable contain insoluble fiber, while oats, beans and lentils contain soluble fiber.

Everybody loves salt. It makes food more flavorful. But we really need to cut down on having so much salt in our diets. Too much salt in a person's diet increases his blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are at the risk of developing heart diseases or having a stroke three times more than that of a person with normal blood pressure.

While you are on your diet, don't forget to check on the fat that you are taking in. You can't eliminate fat from your diet. If you are aiming for a healthy lifestyle, you definitely need fat in your system. But what kind of fat do you need? There are three kinds of fat: saturated fat, trans fat, and unsaturated fat. You can find saturated fat in butter, cakes, coconut oil and even biscuits. This is the kind of fat that you need to cut down. Too much of it can increase the cholesterol in your blood. Trans fat can be found in fast food chains and some margarines and pastry products. This type of fat has the same effect as saturated fat. You don't have to avoid unsaturated fats though. This type actually reduces the cholesterol in your blood. You can find this fat in oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocados, and vegetable oil.

As you get on with your diet, always keep in mind that a healthy lifestyle is all you need to feel great and look great. With a healthy lifestyle, you get to lose weight, be active, and be in good shape all at the same time.
