Where hearing loss starts

Our sense of hearing is so important that it is vital in learning linguistics, culture, or just for us to be able to balance ourselves. To be able to work, there are five sections of the human body that work together for the hearing mechanism to work. The inner ear, the outer ear, middle ear, acoustic nerves and the brain's auditory processing centers are the five sections involved in our hearing mechanisms. Each of these sections has to work together like an orchestra to give the subject perfect hearing and any one of these that encounter any sort of problems may eventually lead to hearing loss.

The sound vibrations are first collected by the outer ear that then funnels them into the ear canal. The brain can process where a sound's origin is and how far it is with the help of the outer ear. The ear canal then follows the outer ear part and this prevents dusts and other tiny foreign matter from entering the ear.

Our eardrum is the next part which is then followed by the middle ear where three significant bones are found. Movements that matches the sound waves from the outer ear are created by these three bones that are called the hammer, anvil and stirrup. After the movement is created, it is then pushed to a membrane in the cochlea which is located in the inner ear.

The cochlea is the part of the inner ear that is shaped like a snail and is filled with fluid and tiny hair cells. The fluid is disrupted and in turn stimulates the tiny hair cells when the mechanical energy pushes thru the membrane. Though they may not all respond the same to a specific sound frequency as they are all stimulated by different sounds.

The brain then will receive nerve impulses from the acoustic nerves once this tiny hair cells are stimulated and has sent their signals. As the acoustic nerve carries these nerve impulses to the brain, the central auditory system is already processing it. Sound is recognized by localizing it or identifying it source from recognizing patterns and differences from previous sound experience.

All these are basically what gives a person his or her ability to hear and understand sound. Permanent hearing loss can result from damage, abnormality or malfunction of any of these sections of the hearing mechanism.
