Why Should I Raise British White Cattle

By: Morris Halliburton

British White Cattle are becoming the breed of choice for many of today's progressive cattle farmers. British Whites have elevated themselves above the old accepted idea that they were mainly just a status symbol of medieval Britain. The modern breed of British White Cattle has many qualities and traits that elevate them above many other beef cattle breeds.

Quality meat and excellent milk producing traits are well know in the British White Cattle Breed of beef cattle. These traits have made it an easy selection in today's cattle industry to propagate the breed towards a high quality beef breed. The trend is away from their long ago dairy traits

British White cattle possess many traits that make them profitable and an ideal choice for large and small cattle producers. They are white with black ears, black muzzle, black around the eyes and black hooves. They have high incidence of passing on their true color. This is very beneficial where white haired stock and pigmentation is preferred for sun reflection.

British White Cattle are naturally polled. This feature alone makes them the first choice over many other breeds. A homozygous polled animal will produce polled offspring even when bred to a horned animal.

British White Cattle may possibly be the most docile beef breed of cattle in the industry. A gentle animal will always do better than wild animals in any environment they are placed in. A trait that makes them easier to handle. They perform better in a feedlot situation by quickly adapting to the surroundings.

British White cattle are very fertile and are easy calving. Some will tell you they are just about the most fertile of any beef cattle breed. Consistently producing a calf every 12 months is one of their best traits.

The British White cow has well set udders with minimum of fatty tissue and medium sized teats that hold their shape. She has the ability to produce ample quantities of rich milk. An abundance of rich milk is available for the baby calf. Plenty of milk helps the baby calf to grow better. British white cows are excellent mothers, they have the nursery system of a guard cow protecting groups of calves while the remainder of the herd grazes. This instinct protects them against predators.

The carcass quality of British White cattle is usually very high. The will consistently hang a carcass of over 60% of live weight. It will be lean and tasty but also have a desirable amount of marbling.

If you want a trouble free breed known for easy keeping and efficiency the British White Cattle are for you. They are readily adaptable to extreme climate whether it is cold and wet or hot and dry. A breed that is know to pretty well take care of itself with much intervention from humans.

The longevity of a cattle herd is tied directly to their profitability. A cow that is able to thrive for many years and raise a good calf each 12 months is always the most favored. British White Cattle are very good at living to a ripe old age with many surpassing 20 years.

The British White Bull is ideal for use on beef and dairy heifers as well as commercial cows. This is about the only way to keep a herd white and British. Cross breeding with British White Bulls will give easy calving results and produce calves with good growth. They seem to have a way to transmit the superior qualities of the breed to their offspring.
